Since the UK left the European Union in January 2020 we have regularly talked with both private and commercial shippers who are looking to either import or export a vehicle between Europe. To answer some of the commonly asked questions we have put together this blog post for you.
I want to import a vehicle from Europe – what documentation do I need?
Initially we require a copy of the overseas registration document and bill of sale/commercial invoice. We will also email you forms to complete dependant on the type of import. This provides us with the information we require to prepare a prelodged Customs declaration.
For commercial hauliers moving vehicles we can also assist with various port/shipping requirements including GMR / ELO / ENS declaration if required.
How is the vehicle transported to the UK?
We prepare the import paperwork for both commercial hauliers and buyers who collect their vehicles across Europe and transport personally back to the UK. We can also arrange the door to door movement of your vehicle back to the UK.
I have purchased and transported my vehicle back to the UK – what happens now?
Once the vehicle is in the UK we notify HMRC and advise on the duty/VAT payment required to clear the vehicle. After this is complete we also apply for your NOVA reference to confirm your vehicle has been corrected imported in the UK and relevant taxes have been paid. VAT registered traders submit their NOVA declaration via their Gov.Uk link with our Customs declaration.
I have purchased a European vehicle import already in the UK with no proof of Customs clearance – can this be declared?
Yes, we submit an arrived Customs declaration to calculate the Customs duty/VAT that is due on the import. Once this has been paid we continue with your NOVA application in readiness for DVLA registration.
Who registers the vehicle with the DVLA?
in addition to the Customs declaration and NOVA we also register vehicles with the DVLA each week. Please contact us if you need further information on this so that we can process this registration efficiently.
I have sold a vehicle into Europe and my buyer requires a UK export declaration, what do I need to provide?
To complete the export declaration on your behalf we need a copy of the registration document, bill of sale and a basic authority we send to you for your signature and return. The export declaration can then be processed and copy sent to you or your haulier ready for travel.
We understand they may be more questions, so do not hesitate to get in touch when moving a vehicle to or from Europe!
